On 26 December 2004, a 9.1-magnitude underwater earthquake caused a tremendous tsunami that devastated Aceh Province, Indonesia, resulting in the deaths of some 128,715 people (as of 18 April 2005). This tragedy evoked great concern internationally. Governments, multilateral organizations, international, national and local NGOs, religious organizations, ethnic organizations, professional organizations, educational institutions and others have rushed to provide aid to the people of Aceh.
As a contribution to the recovery and reconstruction process, SEARC has a year-long project to review, monitor and evaluate the multiple levels of relief work, undertaken by various organisations. The project will (1) survey and compare the impacts of the tsunami on different parts of Aceh (with a focus on women and vulnerable sectors of the population – migrants, children, the elderly and the poor); (2) study, monitor and evaluate the outcomes of the relief work by selected relief organizations; and (3) make policy recommendations of relevance to different parties.
As part of this project, SEARC is developing this Web site to provide updated news and information about SEARC's work in Aceh.
